Teetering on the Brink – How Does the Debt Ceiling Work?, December 2 | Hybrid (Denver/Online) | Accredited

In May of this year, politicians told Americans we faced a “ticking time bomb that will detonate without serious, responsible action”; “playing chicken with the full faith and credit of the United States”; and “a potential economic and financial catastrophe”.  And yet a few months later, we see no evidence in the media of any lingering effects of that crisis.  What caused such reactions – war?  a pandemic?  global warming?  How about a self-imposed limit on government spending . . .

In this class we will focus on the economics around a uniquely American budgetary device – the debt ceiling.  Where did it come from, and why did Congress choose to impose such a limit on itself?  Does it actually work to control government spending?  How does it contribute to government budget mismanagement?  These questions and others will be addressed as we look at the history leading up to this latest flare-up, and the issues resolved (or not) with the most recent budget compromise - at least until January 2025 . . .
