What Is Socialism?: Changing Perceptions and Definitions, March 2nd | Colorado Springs (in-person only) | Accredited

This new curriculum unit from our partners at the Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE) examines the major themes and issues with socialism as well as covering the ideas of what socialism is, how it’s understood today, and how it was applied in the past. Data, analysis, and student activities will highlight the history of socialist thought and application over time. As a classroom topic, comparative economic systems provide an excellent lens for students to see key economic concepts in action.

Participants will leave this workshop with lessons, activities and background information that include: a) Socialism – What Is It? – An activity comparing student responses with results of a poll of the general public and introducing the definition of socialism; b) Socialism Defined – looking at the problems of control and incentives; c) Missing Information and Missing Prices – an activity on the problems of central control with limited information; and d) Failures of Socialism – the knowledge problem and the pathologies of privilege.
