Stock Market Experience (SME) is an engaging online investment simulation that employs math, reading, writing, and technology skills. Over the course of a semester, students work in teams to invest their $100,000 virtual portfolio in U.S. and international exchanges and compete with student teams across the state. Because this program is real-time, students learn to make investments based on current events such as weather, regulatory changes, economics, international affairs while utilizing research and decision-making skills.

”The Stock Market Experience allows us to use math in a practical way. The students don’t even realize they’re doing math! We have rich discussions about current affairs, and how it ties into the stock market, and the students’ portfolios.”

- Flora B., Middle School Teacher

how it works

Teachers register and set up teams of one to five students. Teachers devote whatever class time they wish to the contest. Some spend 20 minutes during several class meetings early in the contest to get students oriented and trading, then set aside 5 to 20 minutes per week for teams to assess performance and make trades.

All teams start with $100,000 in a virtual account. Teams are ranked by total portfolio return throughout the contest. Accounts are frozen at the end of business on the last trading day to determine the final rankings. After the competition has ended, accounts will be unfrozen so students can continue investing for several months and see how their investments turn out over a longer period of time.

  • Mentors and Presenters, financial industry professionals, are available to meet with your class or team. Scheduling is flexible- from one time to once a week- to provide an overview of how the markets work and how to approach investing. Email the program director at SME@econlitco.org for more info.
