Economic Literacy Colorado announces two new scholarships for economics and personal finance students

DENVER–Feb. 21, 2024 – Economic Literacy Colorado (ELC) announced today that, thanks to a generous contribution from the Michael E. McGoldrick Charitable Foundation, it's able to offer two new scholarships to award to economics and personal finance students. Colorado students who have completed a high school economics or personal finance class, or have participated in one of ELC’s student programs, can answer an essay prompt of their choice for the opportunity to win one of two $5,000 scholarships.

“We are so grateful to the McGoldrick family for recognizing the importance of economics and personal finance education,” said ELC CEO and President Amy Sherman. “These scholarships will inspire students to prioritize these types of classes and make college more affordable. We’re excited to grant these scholarships to our future business leaders.”

Interested and eligible students should submit essays by April 8, 2024, and answer the following prompts:

Economics Scholarship: Given what you have learned in your high school Economics class, what does the term “economics” mean to you now? In particular, what impact do you see economic concepts or the “economics way of thinking” having on either your current life, or your life in the future?

Personal Finance Scholarship: What three financial literacy skills you have learned about in high school do you see yourself using the most when you are age 30? Briefly describe the three skills you selected, and why consistent use of these skills might help you make informed decisions, achieve your goals, and/or navigate economic uncertainties effectively in your future life.

“Michael was a life-long learner, was passionate about teaching economics, and an avid participant in the financial markets his entire life,” said Ron Speaker, CEO of the Michael E. McGoldrick Charitable Foundation. “These scholarships would mean so much to him and we’re thankful to Economic Literacy Colorado for ensuring the next generation is well-equipped to achieve a lifetime of financial success.”

Participating students must be residents of Colorado and in their junior or senior year of school at the time of submission. A student applicant must have a teacher sponsor, and the teacher whose student wins the scholarship will also receive $500.
